2024 Harvest Wrap-Up

2024 Harvest Wrap-Up

Stellenbosch experienced one of its wettest winters on record in 2023, with rainfall from January through July soaring above the long-term average, and an unexpected deluge of late September rains. This post-harvest rainfall proved to be particularly beneficial for the vines, fostering excellent root development, and shielding the vines during warmer, drier spells. All of this helped to produce top-quality fruit by preserving the natural acidity in the grapes, which sets the stage for exceptional future berry development.

Not only did 2023 boast record-breaking rainfall, but it also claimed a spot as one of the coldest winters on record. The combined effects of cold spells and abundant rain ensured that all vines entered a proper state of dormancy, promising a fruitful growing season for 2024.

January’s warmth resulted in our harvest starting almost two weeks early, marking the first picking of our Estate Pinotage Bush Vine since their planting in 2017. Intense heat waves led to a rapid ripening of several Estate varieties, both white and red, resulting in successive arrivals at our cellar door within just a few days of each other – it was a busy time for Aaldering! Currently, these wines are fermenting contentedly in tank and barrel, and we are thrilled with the initial tastings.
